THE HEALING by Marie Barlizo

The Healing is a solo show about a woman navigating mental illnesses that she inherited from her father.
I chose to stage it as an incredibly athletic dance duet, using Marie's text as an audio play that would score the work of the dancers. I wanted audiences to not only hear the words, but understand the physical sensation of her mind through movement, sudden bursts of violence, a pulsing score and rare moments of serenity and tenderness. I find often in solo work, we ignore the reality of the images in the text. My goal was to make Marie's mind prison inescapable for an audience.

This was my fourth collaboration with Hanna Kiel and we worked in tandem to create a world of ever shifting boundaries, block towers and a woman haunted by the outline of a childhood swimming pool.
